Tri County Tuesday

Apologies for this not being written on Tuesday! The weather has finally warmed up around here and I've been on many many walks! There was also a scuffle between Bender and Axle, but I'm not sure if I want to blog about it at this time.

Tri county humane society adoptable! A couple of cats and a couple dogs were lucky to have their pictures taken by me :)
But the main goober, squeal like a teenage girl moment? Photographing a litter of rottweiler/lab mix puppies who were a month old! So much cuteness! Zorro was the first of the gang. What a cute little chubber puppy! He was quiet, but super snuggly!

The next up was Zip.  Out of the whole gang, Zip was my favorite. He was a typical month old puppy ~ bouncy and squirmy! He liked to sneak attack me and tried to eat my camera multiple times! He looked more like a Bernese mountain dog than rottie, so he was passed over for his chubby rottie looking brothers.

Missy was the third puppy I photographed, and by far the shyest of the bunch. She wanted to squirm between my knees and snuggle against me. She looked the most like a lab out of the whole bunch.

And lastly was the little porker called Zeke. This guy looked like a rottie to the T minus that his nose was a little on the long side. He was bouncy and not sure of my camera, but the hotdogs really helped!

Meet the Gang: Mick

In October of 2006, I adopted a dog I had fallen in love with at the humane society.

Prior to adopting him, the apartment I was living at wouldn't allow dogs, unless there was a doctor's note. Luckily (but not really) the boyfriend at the time had some heart issues crop up and his doctor  wrote him a note to have a dog for stress relief.

Enter in Mick, formerly Mickey. He had been picked up as a stray, wouldn't play with toys and for the most part lounged on the couch unless the word walk was mentioned. Then he'd prance and his tail would wag crazily. He became my best friend and adventure buddy.

Mick is now the ripe age of 8is or 9is, but still prances around like a puppy when he hears the word walk or car ride. He loves car rides, bones, barking and playing chase. He does get nervous from time to time when there are fireworks, fire, loud noises and large amounts of people. Going back and looking at pictures of him, he's changed a lot in appearance, though his knack for not looking at the camera is still there!

Mick, also known as Buddy, Buggy and Mii.

Snowing...

Once more central Minnesota has been plunged into the depths of winter! Not nearly as the last batch ( the snow was 90% gone when it had rolled around) this is still no fun! Snagged the bf from work early early this morning, and while he slept I headed out with the gang to do some snow shots.

The destination was the Veterans Affairs Hospital. To get to the buildings, one must drive down a road (it makes me think of a two lane driveway...) to a four way intersection. From there the road goes either straight to the main building, left and loops around the entire property, right and away from the VA or back the way from whence we came. I think I made 5 different loops in attempt to find a parking place closer to trees. No luck, so I pulled off the road and parked half in the snow.

Bender was the first subject. I tied him to one of the narrower trees with his 30 ft lead, waited for him to finish dancing (if he has to poo he dances trying to find the perfect spot...), scooped the poo and attempted to get him to look towards me all while the wind is whipping at my back and the snowflakes pelted me in the back. Managed to snag a mere handful of shots of Bender before loading him back up into the car.

Next up was Axle. By this time my hands were super cold, so I snagged a handful of shots before I succumbed to the wind and snow. Or at least my hands did! It was to the point of having trouble pressing buttons on my camera!

Meandered around the VA in search of a place to photograph Mick and Icey. Around a curve I found an awesome little creek that wrapped around in the snow. It wasn't frozen over and I thought it would make a neat backdrop. Mick and Icey with the creek.

Meandered away from the VA towards a set of buildings that I've scouted and photographed many times. The buildings are made of rust hued bricks and most have either huge doors or metal doors in greens or reds. Icey was the only one I photographed at the last location, but she had a blast and did her best sit stay so that she could play with the squeaky tennis ball.

I also need to learn to remember to check my settings (iso 1000! eek!) As well as expose for the scene especially with snow involved! Good thing I have models who will work for cookies! Or tennis balls!

Tri County Tuesday!

Hooray for Tuesdays! I get to have the day free for prepping as well as hanging out with the gang, then off to Tri County Humane Society to snag pictures of all the dogs and cats who need homes. Honestly I would be out there every day minus that it is volunteer work, so my dogs would have to get paying jobs themselves... Not sure they would be fond of that!

Yesterday panned out to be a wonderful day! We've been having cold icky weather for far too long (and I heard word of more...!) which makes it hard to want to be outside. Yesterday started gloomy, then the sun broke through the clouds and everything was warm and springy! Wouldn't have asked for a better day!

There weren't many cats or dogs who needed pictures so my list was fairly short. First up was a yappy female min pin named Tasha. She walked well on a leash and was cute as a button! Before the day was out she was scooped up and on her way to a new home!

Next up was a 2nd min pin, named Gator. Gator had been photographed when he had arrived, but for some reason nobody was interested in adopting him. So I snagged him for retakes outside. Holy energy! Good thing he was a little guy because he pulled and strained at the leash and would have drug me all over the yard had he been bigger! The only thing that got him to stop moving? Hotdogs! (My new secret weapon!) Like Tasha, he too was adopted before the end of the day!

The next up was the awesome Kaiser! This guy is big and a barker, so many people were passing him by. I had photographed him back when he was first at Tri County, and in an attempt to generate some new pictures and new interest, I decided I was going to retake his pictures. He was drool worthy cute, though he did bark at me when I wouldn't throw the ball ASAP! I believe has been adopted as I write this as he is no longer on Tri County's website. Hooray!
Prior to the retakes, I designed a Facebook highlight for Kaiser.

Heartbreaker was the next in line for pictures, and as cute as a button she was, that girl was all puppy! She wanted to bounce around and wrap herself around me, so I employed the duel leash maneuver. There is a set of leashes tied to two of the pines where I usually snag the pictures. During the duel leash maneuver I will clip the dog to the tree tied leash as well as the leash I've walked them on. Viola! Two points of control for those super bouncy dogs!
Stopped for a couple of quick shots of a little tank of a boson terrier who wanted to show off her belly (more on her shortly) then into the cat room to visit the kitties! Brienne was the first I photographed. She is a slender tabby who is very playful and has extra toes! It took a little for her to warm up to me, but when she did I managed to snag some cute and playful pictures of her!

Josie was next up. She happened to be on top of her "bunk" in the top kennel in the cat room. I'm not short by any means, but when the cats are bigger than kittens and on their bunk its super hard to pull them out without messing up the whole kennel. So I will often take pictures of those cats in their kennels. Josie is an interactive kitty and would talk to me as I pet her!

Maddy and Gold were both newcomers and hiding in their litter boxes. Since there were red cards on each of their kennels, I wasn't able to take either one out. Maddy is in the top picture, Gold in the bottom one.

The last cat who needed pictures was Pooky. His sister Blanch had good pictures already, so I snagged the lug (he was a hefty kitty) and brought him down to the everything room. He wasn't a fan of being away from his sister, but he humored me and my camera.
All said and done... but not quite! Kim asked me to snag some pictures of Drake, while Marit asked if I could get some food aggression testing pictures. No problem!

Drake was an older lab who enjoyed sniffing everything. He was fairly calm on his leash, but maintaining his eye contact with me and the camera was a challenge. I think it worked out in the end.
For the food aggression test, they use a faux hand to pet and interact with dogs to rate their food aggression levels. Luckily they were planning on testing one of the dogs when I asked. And even better? It was the little tank of a boston terrier, Vixen! I went a little snap happy with pictures of her before her test. Who can resist a mug like this?!

Tax Season and Ideas on Spending the Return!

Ah tax season! Or better yet the end of submitting for it! Amidst the snow and cold, there was scrambling for pounds of paperwork to submit for a chance at getting repaid by the government. What's not to love about "free" money? So its not really free, but it is money...

So between my 4 W2s (one company bought by another, switched jobs and a maintained 2nd job) and the 2 certificates of rent paid (same deal with a company bought another) I will be receiving a nice little chunk of green.

The bad part? Figuring out how to spend or save it...

Idea #1 - Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC USM lens. This lens is a beast! Half the cost of the Nikon equivalent  but nearly as fast and as sharp. Nearly as in milliseconds. Internal focusing, big glass and its an f2.8 throughout! Also its a full frame lens, so on a crop body it ends up being 105-300 f2.8!!! No the lens doesn't actually change in focal length, the sensor in the body makes the difference. But I digress. This lens would be AMAZING to add to my collection esp for snagging pictures of running and playing dogs! The bad thing? Even though it is half the cost of the Nikon equivalent, it is still $1,500! Ouch!

Idea #2 - Nikon D7000/D7100 body. I've been toying with the thought of having a camera body that will handle low light a bit better. The D7000 is a slight step below the D300s, but has higher mp as well as an expanded iso capability. Less autofocus points, doesn't have the duel card slots, not quite as rugged as the D300s, but being generationally newer it has perks. Also because I can't afford the D800...

Idea #3 - Adding to the lens collection. Nikon makes an amazing 85mm f1.8 that is fast, sharp and fairly budget friendly in the realm of lenses ($460 on bhphotovideo.com). Tamron has a 28-75mm f2.8 lens that is quick and lightweight, won't break the bank ($500 new), has a 6 year warranty and also is a full frame lens so it ends up being 43-103mm. Weird length but great for a less than telephoto midrange lens. I've also toyed with getting a macro lens in the realm of 90mm or 105mm. So many options that would be great additions to my collection! And why not get a couple of lenses vs one? Decisions...

Idea #4 - Bills. This is my least fun and least favorite option, but those bills do like money too...

Idea #5 - Sit on it. Also known as saving. Not as fun especially with so many things to spend it on...

Idea #6 - Trip time! This snow and cold has finally gotten to the point of solid annoyance. I hear that basically anywhere south of here is warmish to toasty these days. Not sure how my car would handle the road trip (its solid, but has some "quirks"). Nothing like a road trip with a broken down car, 4 dogs and the bf. The next thought would be where to go. I'm super partial to Colorado, though not sure how the mountains and altitude would do with my car. Plus its a 14ish hour drive... This option is open for serious debate and planning.

Idea #7 - Invest in a new to me car! My current car as noted in #6 has "quirks". Basically my car is in process of dying without a solid reason as to why it is. The car people can't figure it out and it could die today or 10 years down the road. It also isn't the prettiest (yay busted bummer and peeling paint) nor does it have great ground clearance. Nothing like driving on a poorly maintained road with hood high weeds and just mowing them down so that they tickle the underside of the car. Granted the sound is fairly musical and slightly amusing, but low ground clearance just isn't going to cut it. Ideally a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (the 4 door kind, as I do have dogs) or some other smaller SUV type vehicle. My parents have been  eyeballing and been thinking a Saturn Vue. Awesome car, but not quite the off road contender. Plus its more of a CUV which looks basically like the offspring of a van and car with a hint of SUV somewhere in the generations of its bloodline.

Idea #8 - Marketing and samples! This would be an awesome thing for the reason of people being visual and tactile beings. Marketing would be postcards, shirts, flyers, other "promotional" items with my information on it. Samples would include canvas prints (the bigger the better!), Gallery Block prints and any other products I would want to feature for purchase.

Idea # 9 - 27" iMac "desktop" computer. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 17" Macbook Pro. Bugger is tough and goes everywhere and 17" is a good sized display for viewing images and showing them off. But 27"... drool! This idea was created by visited Best Buy for a memory card. Peeked at the iMac with the 27" screen (which I then managed to freeze...) and was instantly in love! It also would be a bit cheaper than my Macbook ($1799 vs $2000+). The only bad thing? I'd have to keep my desk clean...

Idea # 10 - Attend photography workshops and or conferences. Why not be able to learn as much as I can and get better at what I do? Plus most of the workshops are on location in a different (warmer) state so it would work with #6. And what better thing than to network with fellow photographers and/or pet photographers? Minus that my creative brain and lectures don't get along the greatest.

Now if I could only get/do everything on this list....

Do you have any plans for your tax return money?

Gunner and Dakota Sneak Peek!

Yesterday I got the chance to meet up with Ashley & John and their pair of adorable dogs for their free mini session! Unfortunately for it being Minnesota, we had just received a solid amount of fresh snow. Luckily the dogs didn't care one bit!

Gunner loved the snow, though he wanted to swim in the half frozen pond! He was happy to chase his frisbee or stuffed bird in-between all of the sniffing and wrestling with Dakota. His copper color was amazing and popped against the snow and trees. Between his sniffing and running full out in the snow, he'd coming barreling towards me (ah running doggy faces!) to plop down for some pets and back scratches, as though he was trying to keep me involved in the fun! He was such a hoot!

Like his bigger brother, Dakota also loved being in the snow! The first thing he did was dive off the path and wiggle around in the snow on his back. This was repeated several times and always with great gusto and a happy face. After a couple of pictures he was happy as a clam to be off leash and sniffing around at all the trees and trying to eat all of the sticks! The best part was watching him bounce through the snow, legs and ears flying as he'd race towards me!

I loved shooting this silly pair in the snow! And perhaps I'll get a chance to photograph them when the landscape is a little more green! Thank you Gunner and Dakota for the fun and awesome pictures!

Owning A Reactive Dog

Sounds like a self help or a Dummies book. But reactive dogs are a real thing, and I just happen to own one. Yes he's cute, gets along with his house mates and will retrieve until he passes out, but Axle is a very reactive dog, with some borderline dominance aggression.

Inside, he's well trained. Sit, lay down, play dead (also known as bang), shake each paw, leave it and wait as well as up to get him to stand up on his hind legs. Both toy and food motivated, which makes training a breeze. Outside in his own yard, with his own buddies he retains most of his focus with the various assortment of toys to present to be thrown. Ah mud and spit covered tennis balls - ick!

Now if there was a squirrel, neighbor or other dog, all training and attention goes out the window as he bolts (and this bugger is built for speed) to go meet them if they are dog/human or chase them if they are of the critter variety. Off putting for most because he greets everyone with so much energy and gusto its way over the top. After his poor mannered hellos, he happily trots back into the yard for some more rounds of fetch. Thusly I have acquired heightened senses for critters, dogs and people to catch him and prevent the unmannered meetings.

Outside of the yard is where things start to get interesting. At the dog park, he will rush aggressively up to other dogs to meet them, tail up, head up, staring a bit too intensely. Most other dogs aren't fond of this and will correct him which amps him up more until they scuffle. The scuffles are short lived, as they are quickly corrected, though the owners of the other dog aren't super thrilled that my dog is a bit too much over the top. Once he's done his meet and greets, he is perfectly content to retrieve items being thrown without another glance at the other dogs.

Did I mention he's got a possessiveness about toys? This means that no matter what toy he is currently playing with, the toy the other dog is much better and the one he wants. At the dog park, being as fast as he is, he just outruns the other dog to catch the thrown item, to bring it back to the other dog's owner.  Great, minus that his give skills are not the best, and he'd rather play tug with the item. That and the other owners want to play with their dog, not mine. Axle also is possessive about toys in the house, but if another dog has what is "his" he will do his best to get it from them without getting his face eaten off. And he whines if he can't get it or the item isn't thrown in a timely manner. He's started to "sing" when he really really really wants the ball.

But I digress. The reactivity is noticeable anywhere we encounter new dogs, especially if he's on a leash or through a fence, and slightly less if he's off leash. His brain basically goes OMGADOG!!!ANEWDOGABUDDY!!!IWANTTOMEETTHEM!!! (times 300). And there is no redirecting him once he has made that step. At my old apartment, where there were many "new" dogs to encounter, I would keep him away from the other dog and have him sit while the other dog would go in or come out. Being so amped up, he would get to sit, sit there and shake and whine very loudly at the other dog. Once the dog was removed, he was calmer, though he would often look for the other dog.

Pet stores in the manner of Petsmart and Petco produce the same resulting whine which seems to be amplified through the enclosed openness that easily reaches the front of the store, even though we are in the way back of the store. Slightly embarrassing to have a dog that is so amped up about another dog that he is basically screaming because he wants so badly to meet the other dog.

The result? Less visits to the pet stores, less visits to the dog park. There are two dog parks a short distance from my house, and if there are dogs there when I do a driveby on them, I tend to avoid them. Tie in the factor of a reactive reactive foster pitbull (he's fairly indifferent to other dogs, but if they are over the top he will react to it) and the dog park visits are few. Though on those days there is no one, bliss!

Today was one of those days. Cool, slightly breezy, Bender peeing on everything and occasionally running around, Axle focused on his ball. The bf and I had been there roughly an hour. I was running low on the hotdogs I was using for some recall training for Bender, and Axle was well run, so I had been thinking of wrapping up the dog park session. A car pulls up, and a couple with their boxer and basset hound get out. Caught Bender, and just about had Axle when he saw the other dogs. Straight to the fence to pace and whine, his ball totally forgotten. The couple came into the first set of gates (luckily this dog park has two sides) and I asked that they go in the opposite sides because Axle was reactive to other dogs. And in true form, he was at the end of his leash, whining with great gusto, while Bender was straining at his, barking and getting amped up from Axle.

I decided it was time to head out. The joys of a 65lb dog who is determine to go where he wants to go and is strong enough to pull you there. The opposite side of the dog park, unfortunately shares a side where the sidewalk goes, and the basset and the boxer where happy to bounce along the fence, while Axle strained, whined and struggled to see them, and Bender barked and strained. Kept moving forward and finally got Axle on my right side, so that it was harder for him to see the other dogs. It also allowed his brain to kick in slightly and keep him moving forward. In the car, both Bender and Axle had their noses pressed tightly against the window in attempt to see the boxer and basset hound better.

Now we are home. Bender is solidly passed out on the couch, while Axle is totally conked out on the bed. Hooray for tired doggies!

The quest for knowledge has begun to be able to desensitize Axle to the stimuli of other dogs, so that he might be able to live a less stressed life. Especially since he is only going to be 2 years old this summer. Here's to Axle and the hopes that he can be less reactive in the future!

The Dogs Need Jobs...

So I was thinking the other day, about working and retail jobs, when I decided that I needed a job where I could bring the dogs with me, or at least be around them a lot of the time. Or they would need to get jobs themselves! These boogers have been mooching off of me for how long? If only they could pull their own weight... Ok not really! But it got me thinking on what each dog's job would be if the had to grow up and go to work.

Icey would be the official chair and couch comfort tester. She would then write up her findings and pass it along to other dogs so that they could tell their owners which couch or chair to buy. She would also be a great food tester or foodie. She loves food and will eat just about everything. She would blog about her findings, and possibly open a restaurant, though she wouldn't cook, just eat!

Mick's job would be an alarm clock. He already has a strong knack for this, though its not when the alarm goes off, but when he thinks his person is almost awake. He then jumps up on the bed, licks, tramples and rolls around. I'm not sure what other jobs he could manage, but if cute were a job he's got that down pat!

Axle would be a toy tester in the retrieving and tugging division. He will retrieve until he drops and he can handle all kinds of extreme weather to test out the retrievability of each toy. But his best job would be in the tugging division. He might look slim and lean, but this boy has a powerful tug and an underbite that gives him an advantage of locking onto the toy. He has half destroyed most of the toys from his tugging ability. He'd help dog toy makers to come up with durable & retrievable toys, while being paid handsomely.

Bender would be in the toy tester business, though his job would be the durability tester, ie chewer! This boy has been gifted with the ability to rapidly chew through seemingly solid toys in barely a blink of the eye. Rope toys have been turned into hundreds of strands of floss held together by feeble knots, while lesser toys have be chewed and plucked apart as though they were made from thin cheap plastic. The toys that Axle had half destroyed have been fully destroyed by the chewing ability of this guy. Bender would help toy makers make the strongest dog toys on the market. He probably would have a quota of toys to test in a day, and could support the rest of us with the money he'd make!

But alas, there are no job openings in my area for my dogs' skill sets! So currently they are in lounge mode (like usual). Icey and Bender hogging the couch, Mick on the floor on a blanket and Axle quite possibly snugging with the bf in bed! Its a rough life!

Spay and Neuter Surgery

During one of my sessions at Tri County Humane Society, Kim the volunteer coordinator asked if I would be interested in photographing the spays and neuters in the surgery building. I agreed to, though with not having seen a spay or neuter I had no idea what to look forward (or brace) for.

It was a lot more interesting, and a lot less bloody/gorey/icky than I had braced for. The vet was well practiced, and the two ladies who were the techs were interactive and comfortable. There was also a vet tech in training there as well for more of a hands on learning. I apologize for the lack of names, my introduction was casual and assumed as they knew who I was, and I had worked with these ladies before. If I come across their names I will surely make note of them.

**Please note, the following pictures contain spay surgery images, so if your stomach is queasy about stitches, scalpels, cuts, blood and organs you may want to stop here**

The first surgery was a spay on a 6 month old female grey and white kitten. While the vet prepped, the techs prepped the kitten. She was put completely under, with a trachea tube to keep her breathing and a heart rate monitor stuck to her tongue. She was turned onto her back, and tied in a taunt spread eagle position with each foot tied gently to a corner on the table, so as to avoid movement during the surgery. She was then shaved and had her bladder evacuated. Poor little kitten had a lot of urine in there! She was cleaned, then a pale blue drape was laid over her with a hole for the incision. A small cut and some manipulation, and lots of clamps pulled the ovaries out.

During this time I was snapping away at the vet, with some shots that were focused on the hands. Because there was a light above the table, my camera would read it as a spotlight which created an interesting look and helped to emphasize the delicate movements that were performing the surgery. The second picture below is of the ovaries and uterus, clamped and in process of being removed for sterilization. The third picture is of the female kitten's brother, in prep for his neuter surgery.

Tri County Tuesday

Another adventure at Tri County Humane Society! All of these cuties are looking for a new home!

When I arrived it was requested that I do a reshoot with Tisha, ash she had been in the shelter since February! I was delighted to be able to take her out and get some pictures without snow!

Mini Morning Session!

Up earlier than usual this morning, so I decided that I would do some more scouting in the St. Joe area, possibly to revisit the walking bridge. Didn't make it that far as a quaint little bridge on a still frozen pond caught my eye. It was the St. Joe municipal park, complete with benches, a shelter, frisbee golf (oddly the cages were up in the snow...), a pond and the little bridge I had seen.

The sun was still low, great for backlit shots, awful for the temperature which was frosty. Nothing like having frozen toes and fingers! Didn't help that my near tumble from last night's bike ride with dogs was rendering my body into a solid state of soreness and paired with the cold, it was pretty uncomfortable. But I did manage to snag some shots that were keepers!

Easter and Kitties!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!

Visited my parents house but left the dogs at home because my sister was bringing her new fluffball of a kitten, Elle! I couldn't get enough pictures of that face!

My parents' cats weren't super fond of this cute inquisitive kitty, but Elle didn't mind. I didn't manage to get any pictures of Snuggles, but I snagged a bunch of the almost 20 year old Midnight (aka Mini Poo Poo or Poo Poo, coined by my sister long ago). She is starting to show signs of her age. Down to one fang, and her hearing has started to go. She still plays like a younger cat, and "talks" when she sees her people.

Behind Blog...

Indeed this blog is behind. By a mere couple of weeks or so. But now we are back in the swing of things so to recap what was missed:

Dog and cat pictures at Tri County Humane Society twice in one week! From Tuesday 3/21

From Thurs 3/25
This tuckered out guy is Rooster. He had just gotten back from surgery and the effects were still wearing off!
•••
I've been also out and about scouting for the upcoming mini session that I have on April 13th. Found a really cool walking bridge that spans over the interstate (my rottweiler was weirded out by the cars and trucks going underneath her), a couple of woodsy spots with roads and paths through them.

Followed by a mini bunny ear session in time for Easter....
Scouting in Sartell with all four dogs...

Then out later that day with the younger two, Axle and Bender for some train shots. Bender needs work on his modeling skills, but Axle was a pro!
